Getting angry and aggressive when you're behind the wheel can work against you. If you want to learn how to avoid road rage and make sure you have safer and calmer drives, read this post by Jim Allen in Spencer

Have you ever felt that anger takes hold of you when you're driving? Be it that someone cuts you off or the driver in front of you is going incredibly slow, you see red, and you feel like you can't control yourself. As a result, you swerve, honk, yell, and drive violently. This is known as road rage, and it can be extremely dangerous. As you have probably experienced, road rage can get the best of you, lead you to make more mistakes behind the wheel, and may put you in harm's way.  Not to mention, not being able to control your emotions and exploding because another vehicle didn't put their blinkers on can't be good for your mental health. Needless to say, you should try your best to stay away from road rage. For tips on how to avoid road rage effectively, continue reading the post below.

How to Avoid Road Rage

Plan Your Drives Well

Road rage is stress pouring out of you because of situations behind the wheel. So your best bet to get rid of road rage is to avoid stress when you're driving. The main tip to make that happen is to plan your drives better. Planning will allow you to be ready for whatever happens on the road (even for things that you didn't see coming). For example, it's a good idea to leave with more than enough time to get to your destination. This way, if there's a lot of traffic or something doesn't go as planned, you won't feel as pressured. You should also plan the routes you'll take to get to your destination. If you know you'll be driving in rush hour, you can take alternative roads that aren't filled with cars. Even if it takes you a bit longer to get where you want to go, you'll avoid traffic and the stress associated with it. If possible, you should also plan your outings around the hottest part of the day (between 11 am and 6 pm). Avoid the harsh sun to stay calm if you know that the heat makes you hot and bothered.

Create a Zen Environment Inside

If the road outside is chaotic and hot, you can avoid road rage by making the environment inside calm and zen. This means creating a place in your vehicle when you can stay away from the chaos outside. For starters, turn the AC on. If being hot annoys you, keeping a cool climate in your vehicle will help you have cooler emotions too. Next, you can tune out some of the noise outside (but not too much, as you still need to listen to what's happening on the road). You can play relaxing music, a podcast, an audiobook, or something that makes you happy. Lastly, you can try breathing exercises, meditating, or other relaxation techniques to control your emotions better and how you react to them.

Learn to Let Somethings Go

Lastly, you may need to go to therapy to do this effectively, but try to let a few things go. There are situations in which anger and a honk are necessary, but most of the time, driving behind a slow driver isn't one of them. Learn to differentiate when, where, and how to get angry. But, for the most part, you need to let it go when a driver isn't using their blinkers. If a driver makes a mistake, a small honk may do the trick and help them correct it. If the road rage is directed at you, do not engage. If you made a mistake you can correct, fix it promptly and safely. If not, keep going and ignore the person honking and yelling at you. In the end, you'll be a safer driver and a happier person if you avoid road rage.
